Wristband Standardization
Color-coded patient wristbands can be an effective way to communicate
a wide variety of patient information to medical personnel. But unless
the same color designates the same condition to all medical personnel,
errors can occur. The Foundation for Healthy Communities continues to
promote better patient safety practices. We have launched a major
statewide initiative to standardize color-coded wristbands by January 1,
2009 in those hospitals that use them.

The Foundation for Healthy Communities has developed an implementation
toolkit for
hospitals, which includes sample policies, educational materials,
frequently asked questions, and a mechanism for ordering the wristbands.
You can also download a
PowerPoint
presentation which summarizes the background of the wristband
project in NH and why we think it's so important.
