Using Technology to Improve Access to Language Services
The incredible growth of the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community has far outstripped the funding of language access programs designed to support them. As the growth rate continues to accelerate, hospitals struggle to build cost-effective, scalable systems to meet the growing demand interpretation services.   Details/Resources

Leveraging Data to Improve the Quality & Availability of Language Services  (V. Good! -rsky)
As our patient population grows more diverse, hospitals are increasingly challenged to provide high quality language services to patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). Learn how the systematic capture and utilization of patient data allows hospitals to more effectively target improvement strategies for language service delivery. Details/Resources

Language & Cultural Barriers in Health Care – A Growing Crisis
This is the first in a series of panel discussions on the crisis language and cultural barriers have created in the health care industry. Approximately 26 million U.S. residents speak little or no English. More than 50 million speak a language other than English at home. What do these people have in common? Most will pass through the health care system at some time, but will have difficulty gaining access to services and communicating clearly with providers.  Details/Resources

ProLingua - Adding Technology to meet Language Needs
In today's economic climate, the "do more with less" philosophy has never been more real. The growing demand for language services competes directly with increased pressure to maintain or even cut the budgets that fund their delivery. ProLingua is a software technology designed specifically to help healthcare organizations overcome this challenge.

Web-based Continuing Education Credit Activities - Free!

Ø      The US DHHS Office of Minority Health offers a web-based CME opportunity titled "A Family Physician's Practical Guide to Culturally Competent Care."  This educational activity is offered at no charge.  The CME program keeps track of what sections you have completed, gives instant, on-line certifications for up to 9 hours of American Medical Association Category 1 CME credit and 9 hours of American Academy of Family Physicians' credit.  The cultural competency curricula offers information about a variety of cultural, language services and organizational issues using a variety of engaging case studies and real feedback from providers in health care settings.  This program equips family physicians with awareness, knowledge, and skills to better treat the increasingly diverse U.S. population they serve.  By the end of the program you will be able to:  define issues related to cultural competency in medical practice; identify strategies to promote self-awareness about attitudes, beliefs, biases, and behaviors that may influence the clinical care they provide; devise strategies to enhance skills toward the provision of care in a culturally competent clinical practice; demonstrate the advantages of the adoption of the CLAS standards as appropriate in their clinical practice.  For more information on this program, please contact info@thinkculturalhealth.org

Ø      US DHHS Health Services and Resources Administration offers, Unified Health Communication 101: Addressing Health Literacy, Cultural Competency, and Limited English Proficiency, a free on-line learning experience that will help you improve your patient communication skills, increase your awareness and knowledge of the three main factors that affect your communication with patients: health literacy, cultural competency and low English proficiency, implement patient-centered communication practices that demonstrate cultural competency and appropriately address patients with limited health literacy and low English proficiency.  You may choose to take the course for credit (CEU/CE, CHES, CME, CNE) or not for credit.  The course has five modules and is estimated to take a total of 5 hours to complete. You may complete the course at your own pace.

Ø     Public Health Foundation in affiliation with NH Division of Public Health Services listing of over 40 web-based trainings related to cultural competency with links, ceu info, and reviews.  Most courses listed are free.
