The Foundation for Healthy Communities recently honored Weeks Medical Center with its New Hampshire Health Access Network Leadership Award at the New Hampshire Hospital Association and Foundation for Healthy Communities Annual Meeting at the Mount Washington Hotel and Resort in Bretton Woods.
The New Hampshire Health Access Network is a Foundation initiative to help low-income residents get free and discounted care. All of the state’s hospitals and dozens of clinics and physicians volunteer their resources to meet a certain level of financial assistance to patients who are either underinsured or have no insurance at all. Since its creation in 2003, more than 140 health care provider organizations have signed on to help low-income patients through the Network, and it’s growing every year.
Weeks Medical Center deserved extra recognition this year for using technology to its advantage as a Network participant. Building on an existing computer software program to determine eligibility for its internal discount, this hospital added criteria for the Health Access Network. The result is a tool that can identify patients eligible for both programs in a timely manner, and this has made great improvements in the hospital’s financial assistance program.
